This talk is a case study of Strava's introduction of lightweight chaos engineering experiments into a small engineering team to help exercise reliability patterns and expose unknown, or thought-handled, production-impacting contingencies. We will look at both the technical impetus and context into which experiments were introduced, as well as the cultural context and changes required in order to do so (culture of safety, a minimal impact on other engineering deliverables). Finally, we will analyze some real experiments, their immediate results, and ensuing changes.
